From the introduction:
At the end of the 18th century, George Washington had some inspiring and thought-provoking things to say about the state of our country and its law. At the end of the 19th century, Melville W. Fuller had some interesting things to say about Washington, and about the state of our country and its law. We reprint both addresses, along with a number of related documents. Rather than offer new insight at the end of the 20th century, we merely note how many of Washington's and Fuller's concerns are still with us. Today, Washington remains an "old and affectionate friend" needing little introduction. Accordingly, we offer the reader a quick summary of Fuller's life and a little background on his speech, and close with our thoughts on his long-term influence on the Supreme Court's jurisprudence.
