| In our attempt to help those students, and
judges, who are now embarking on the crazed ritual that is the clerkship application
process, the Dialogue section of the Autumn issue includes a thoughtful discussion of Clerkship
Politics between Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the
Ninth Circuit and Fred Bernstein, one of the judge's former clerks. Whether Clerkship
Politics will help aspiring clerks and hiring judges make wise choices during the
clerk selection process, or whether it will merely fan the flames of clerk-judge passions,
we don't know. We do know that we'd rather give all those good people the information we
have, and let them decide what to make of it. And so we offer here Clerkship Politics.
In order to make the dialogue appear on our web site exactly as it appears in the print
version of the Green Bag, we've decided to make Clerkship Politics
available in Adobe'sŪ Portable Document Format. Providing the file in PDF also allows you
to print out the dialogue on your laser printer in what we consider to be a rather
appealing form (before you do so, you should certainly read our Copyright Notice and Terms of Use). As a result of our extensive survey
(asking our friends) and analysis (talking it over), we have concluded that most people
have browsers that support PDF files. If your browser does not, you should proceed
immediately to Adobe Systems in order
to obtain a
free version of their Acrobat ReaderŪ software. We think it is worth the time it will
take to download and install. Until you do, you will be missing out on some of the best
content the Web has to offer (including, incidentally, this dialogue).
